Raw Dog Food Recipe

Raw Pet Food

Making your own raw dog food is a much easier task than some people may suppose when they are considering the transition to a raw diet for their pet. Many of the ingredients needed to provide a balanced diet are now readily available, where once the only option was plain raw meat or vegetables.

There are a whole host of reasons to feed your dog a species appropriate diet (meaning primarily high amounts of raw protein like they would get in nature), including some veterinarians beginning to recommend it for various health problems. I won’t go into all of that here (other posts will have more detail). Suffice it to say my family has seen incredible improvements in both dogs and cats fed a raw food diet.

Here is one of our favorite raw dog food recipes that you can double or triple and then freeze it and take out what you need a couple of days at a time. This is a time saver and freezing does little or no damage to the value of the raw food.

You will need: (all ingredients should be raw/uncooked)

1. 1/4 cup cold-pressed organic olive oil
2. 1 ground organic carrot or raw carrot powder
3. 2 organic eggs
4. 1 cup organic rye or barley
5. handful of blueberries
6. 1 cup sugar pod peas
7. 1 cup ground sunflower seeds
8. 1 cup raw cottage cheese or raw milk
9. 4 fish oil softgels (squeezed out onto food)
10. 2 tablespoons brewers yeast (Lewis Labs best)
11. whole food vitamins for dogs as directed
12. 2 tablespoons bonemeal
13. 4 pure cranberry capsules from health food store
14. 1 cup diatomaceous earth (may help keep parasites at bay)
15. 1 tablespoon powdered greens for dogs or organic barley grass powder
16. 2 organic chicken breasts or 1 turky breast (fresh or frozen)
17. 1 digestive enzyme added on top of each dish at the time of serving (may improve digestion)

Mix all ingredients except chicken and enzymes in a large bowl. Shred chicken and remove bones (unless you have a way to grind them into powder, as anything larger has potential to cause serious intestinal damage). Mix shredded chicken into bowl and divide into portions on a tray if desired. Then serve (or freeze).

This should make about 6 servings for a small to medium sized dog, although you will have to experiment to see how much works best for your canine friend. How long it will last depends on how many times a day you feed your dog. If you feed twice daily it may last for roughly 3 days.

My dog eats mostly raw and so we decided to give this recipe a try. We had to change it a bit as we finally figured out he did not like the blueberries. But now he gobbles it right up! Plus we feel we are giving him a pretty complete formula now. Thanks for the help!

Thry loves tomatoes and dogs can eat a chocolate substitute called carob, because it doesn’t have the substance that harms your dog.
